As an expat living in Spain, your travel insurance needs are different from someone buying cover for a package holiday. When you travel back to the UK, across Europe or to the US, standard UK travel insurance policies may not cover you — many specifically exclude cover for people resident outside the UK. You need specialist expat travel insurance that recognises Spain as your country of residence and covers trips made from Spain to destinations worldwide.
Most mainstream UK travel insurance sold online assumes the buyer is a UK resident travelling abroad for holidays. If you are resident in Spain, you face several problems:
The core of any travel policy. Covers hospitalisation, emergency treatment, surgery and emergency dental treatment in the country you are visiting. For US travel, this is critical — US medical costs can reach tens of thousands of euros for even routine emergencies.
If you are too ill to travel commercially, medical repatriation covers the cost of an air ambulance or medically supervised flight back to Spain. This can cost €50,000–€150,000 without insurance.
If you must cancel your trip before departure or cut it short due to illness, family emergency or other covered reason, the policy reimburses non-refundable costs (flights, accommodation, tours).
Theft or loss of luggage, travel documents and personal items. Declare high-value items (cameras, laptops, jewellery) separately to ensure adequate limits.
As a Spanish resident, trips to the UK are treated as international travel. Specialist expat travel policies include the UK as a covered destination for emergency medical treatment.
Annual multi-trip policies for a Spanish-resident adult typically cost €80–€200/year for European cover, or €150–€350/year for worldwide cover including the USA. Families and older travellers pay more. Medical history significantly affects pricing — declare all pre-existing conditions accurately to avoid claim refusals.
