Whether you're a full-time autocaravanista based in Spain or a part-year resident touring the country, you need a specialist motorhome insurance policy — standard car insurance does not adequately cover a vehicle that also functions as your home.

Is Motorhome Insurance Required by Law in Spain?

Yes. In Spain, motorhomes are classified as vehículos de motor and are subject to the same mandatory third-party liability requirements as cars. At minimum, you must carry seguro de responsabilidad civil obligatoria (compulsory third-party) to drive legally on Spanish roads. Driving without it carries fines starting at €601 and possible vehicle impoundment.

What Does Motorhome Insurance Cover?

Third-Party (Obligatoria)

The legal minimum. Covers damage and injury caused to third parties. Does not cover your own vehicle or contents.

Third-Party Fire and Theft

Adds fire and theft of the motorhome to third-party cover. Useful for older motorhomes where fully comprehensive premiums are high relative to vehicle value.

Fully Comprehensive (Todo Riesgo)

Covers accidental damage to your motorhome in addition to third-party, fire and theft. Includes windscreen, mirrors, and bodywork damage. Strongly recommended for motorhomes given their higher replacement cost.

Living Equipment and Contents

Motorhome-specific policies cover the habitation area — furnishings, kitchen appliances, electronics, solar panels, awning and personal effects. Standard car insurance excludes all of this. Contents limits typically range from €3,000 to €15,000.

European Breakdown and Repatriation

Essential for long-distance touring. Covers roadside assistance, towing, overnight accommodation, and vehicle repatriation across Europe. Many Spanish motorhome insurers offer RACE or MAPFRE assistance as standard.

How Much Does Motorhome Insurance Cost in Spain?

Third-party-only motorhome insurance starts from approximately €300/year. Fully comprehensive policies for a motorhome valued at €30,000–€60,000 typically range from €600–€1,200/year including contents and European breakdown cover. Motorhomes over €80,000 or converted vehicles are quoted individually.
