Spain is one of Europe's most popular motorhome destinations, with year-round sunshine, an extensive network of áreas de autocaravanas (motorhome service areas), and stunning routes from the Pyrenees to Andalucia. Whether you're a full-time autocaravanista based in Spain or a part-year resident touring the country, you need a specialist motorhome insurance policy — standard car insurance does not adequately cover a vehicle that also functions as your home.
Yes. In Spain, motorhomes are classified as vehículos de motor and are subject to the same mandatory third-party liability requirements as cars. At minimum, you must carry seguro de responsabilidad civil obligatoria (compulsory third-party) to drive legally on Spanish roads. Driving without it carries fines starting at €601 and possible vehicle impoundment.
The legal minimum. Covers damage and injury caused to third parties. Does not cover your own vehicle or contents.
Adds fire and theft of the motorhome to third-party cover. Useful for older motorhomes where fully comprehensive premiums are high relative to vehicle value.
Covers accidental damage to your motorhome in addition to third-party, fire and theft. Includes windscreen, mirrors, and bodywork damage. Strongly recommended for motorhomes given their higher replacement cost.
Motorhome-specific policies cover the habitation area — furnishings, kitchen appliances, electronics, solar panels, awning and personal effects. Standard car insurance excludes all of this. Contents limits typically range from €3,000 to €15,000.
Essential for long-distance touring. Covers roadside assistance, towing, overnight accommodation, and vehicle repatriation across Europe. Many Spanish motorhome insurers offer RACE or MAPFRE assistance as standard.
Third-party-only motorhome insurance starts from approximately €300/year. Fully comprehensive policies for a motorhome valued at €30,000–€60,000 typically range from €600–€1,200/year including contents and European breakdown. Motorhomes over €80,000 or converted vehicles are quoted individually.
Yes, though this is complex. If you are resident in Spain, Spanish law requires that your vehicle be re-registered here within 30 days of establishing residency. We can arrange transitional cover while you complete the re-registration process.
Most specialist motorhome policies include fitted accessories such as solar panels, satellite dishes and bike carriers as part of the vehicle. Declare all accessories when taking out the policy to avoid any disputes at claim time.
Most Spanish insurers cover motorhomes up to 15–20 years old on fully comprehensive terms. Older motorhomes can usually be covered on a third-party or agreed-value classic basis.
Wild camping regulations vary by autonomous community. Your motorhome insurance covers the vehicle wherever it is parked legally. Confirm your overnight parking is legal — Catalonia and the Balearics have strict rules.
