Nerja, at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol, has kept the character that much of the coast west of Málaga lost decades ago: a walkable old town around the Balcón de Europa, whitewashed streets, and the beaches of Burriana and Maro backed by the cliffs of the Sierras de Tejeda natural park. It has been a favourite of British expats since the 1960s, and today roughly a quarter of registered residents are foreign, with the British the largest group by far.
The housing mix in Nerja is distinctive: older townhouses in the centre, apartment communities near Burriana, and hillside urbanisations such as Capistrano Village with their cascading white villas. A large share of foreign-owned property here is let to holidaymakers for part of the year — which changes what the right insurance looks like.
English is widely spoken, there is an established international social scene, and many residents split the year between Nerja and the UK or Ireland. We work the same way — everything from quotes to claims handled in English, whether you are in Spain or abroad when something goes wrong.
Two things matter especially in Nerja. First, age of housing stock: older townhouses can have dated wiring and plumbing, and water damage is by some distance the most common home claim in Spain — check that your policy includes damage search-and-access cover. Second, holiday letting: if your apartment is on a rental platform, a standard home policy will often not cover guest-caused damage or your liability to guests. We arrange policies designed for holiday lets, alongside standard cover — see home insurance in Spain for the basics.
Nerja's public health centre handles primary care, but the reference hospitals are in Vélez-Málaga and Málaga city, up to 50 minutes away. Many foreign residents — particularly retirees — choose private health insurance for direct access to English-speaking specialists in Málaga's private hospitals without referral waits. If you are applying for residency, we arrange visa-compliant policies with no copayments.
The N-340 and the A-7 autovía connect Nerja west to Málaga and east toward Almuñécar, and a car remains essential for most residents outside the town centre. We arrange Spanish car insurance in English, transfer foreign no-claims records where possible, and recommend pairing it with Spanish breakdown cover for the coastal and mountain roads.
We also arrange life and funeral policies, pet insurance, and civil liability cover for small businesses serving the tourist trade — bars, shops, guides and rental agencies throughout the Axarquía.
