Spain's climate, dry roads and thriving classic car community make it a wonderful place to own and drive a classic vehicle. But standard car insurance is entirely wrong for a classic vehicle — you need a specialist policy that values your car correctly, covers its true market value, and understands that it is driven far less than a modern vehicle.
Standard car insurance in Spain is priced for vehicles driven 10,000–20,000 km per year, depreciating in value over time. A classic car is the opposite: it appreciates, it is driven rarely, and its true value is determined by the collector market rather than any standard valuation book.
In Spain, vehículos históricos (historic vehicles) are classified under Royal Decree 1247/1995. Vehicles over 25 years old can apply for historic vehicle status and a special H plate, which unlocks specialist insurance products and, in some regions, reduces road tax.
The most important feature. You and the insurer agree the value of the car upfront. In the event of a total loss, you receive the agreed amount — not a depreciated market value. Critical for rare or restored vehicles where the real-world value far exceeds any standard book price.
As with all vehicles on Spanish roads, third-party liability is the legal minimum. Specialist classic policies include this as standard with limits from €6 million upward.
Covers damage with a commitment to original specification repair — using period-correct parts where available, and specialist restorer labour rates rather than standard bodyshop pricing.
Most classic car policies offer limited mileage schemes (2,500 km, 5,000 km, 7,500 km per year) that significantly reduce the premium. If you only drive your classic on weekends and to shows, a limited-mileage policy makes strong financial sense.
Driving your classic to concours events, club rallies or show-and-shine weekends is covered under most specialist policies. Track day cover is an optional extension.
A well-maintained classic car driven under 5,000 km/year with a stated value of €20,000 can be insured comprehensively from approximately €250–€500/year. High-value classics (over €100,000) are rated individually. Storing your vehicle in a locked garage and having a tracker fitted reduces premiums substantially.
