Advice in your language
Spain is one of the best countries in Europe to own a motorbike — dry roads for most of the year, mountain passes an hour from the coast, and a culture where two wheels are part of everyday life. But insuring a motorcycle here works differently from the UK or Ireland, and a surprising number of expats end up over-paying or, worse, riding with cover that isn't valid. This page explains how Spanish motorcycle insurance works and how we help you get it right.
Which Cover Do You Need?
Spain treats these three as separate vehicle classes, with different licences and different insurance rules. Pick the one that matches what you ride:
- Mopeds and scooters 50cc–125cc — AM or A1 licence — Vespa, SH125, Kymco and similar.
- Motorbikes over 125cc — A2 or full A licence — naked, sport, touring and trail bikes. You are on the right page.
- Electric scooters (VMP / patinete) — No licence required — capped at 25 km/h under DGT rules.
Is Motorcycle Insurance Compulsory in Spain?
Yes. Every motorcycle registered in Spain — from a 125cc commuter to a 1,200cc tourer — must carry at least third-party liability insurance (seguro obligatorio, often abbreviated SOA) before it can be ridden on a public road. Riding without it carries a fine of up to €3,000 and the bike can be impounded on the spot. Your insurer registers the policy with the national database (FIVA), which the Guardia Civil can check electronically, so a lapsed policy is easily spotted.
Levels of Motorcycle Cover in Spain
Third Party Only (Terceros)
The legal minimum. Covers injury and damage you cause to other people and their property. Does not cover your bike or your own injuries. Suitable for older, low-value bikes.
Third Party, Fire & Theft (Terceros Ampliado)
Adds theft, fire and usually windscreen/fairing glass. Theft cover matters more than you might think: motorbikes are the most stolen vehicle type in coastal Spain, particularly 125cc scooters and popular adventure bikes.
Fully Comprehensive (Todo Riesgo)
Covers accidental damage to your own bike regardless of fault, usually with an excess (franquicia) of €150–€600. Worth it on any bike above roughly €5,000 in value. Many insurers will only offer comprehensive cover on bikes under 8–10 years old.
What Is Typically Included?
- Unlimited third-party injury liability and up to €15 million property damage (Spanish legal minimums are high)
- Legal defence and claims against third parties (defensa jurídica)
- Rider personal accident cover (accidentes del conductor) — usually €6,000–€30,000 for death or disability
- Roadside assistance, typically from km 0 — a real benefit if you ride into the mountains
- Helmet and riding gear cover on better policies (up to €600–€1,500)
- Accessories and modifications if declared (panniers, exhausts, heated grips)
Licence Requirements for Expats
Spain follows the EU licence structure: AM (mopeds to 50cc), A1 (up to 125cc / 11kW), A2 (up to 35kW) and the full A licence. A UK category A licence is recognised for residents who exchange it; if you hold a UK licence and became resident after the 2023 UK–Spain agreement, you can exchange it without retaking a test. Insurers will ask for your licence category and the date it was obtained, and some will decline riders with less than two years on the category for larger bikes.
One expat-specific point: a car licence (category B) held for more than three years lets you ride a 125cc bike without any motorcycle test in Spain. Insurers do cover this, but premiums are higher than for a holder of a full A1 licence.
How Much Does Motorcycle Insurance Cost in Spain?
As a rough guide for a rider over 30 with a clean record:
- 125cc scooter, third party: €120–€220/year
- 500–700cc naked or adventure bike, third party fire & theft: €250–€450/year
- Large touring or sports bike, fully comprehensive: €450–€900/year
Postcode matters enormously — the same bike can cost 40% more to insure in Málaga or Alicante than in inland Murcia because of theft rates. Garaged bikes attract meaningful discounts, as does declaring a secondary bike (many insurers offer multi-bike or bike-plus-car discounts).
Can I Transfer My No-Claims Bonus?
Often, yes. Most Spanish insurers will recognise a no-claims history from the UK, Ireland, Germany or other EU countries if you provide a letter from your previous insurer in English or Spanish confirming years claim-free. This can cut your premium by 30–50%, so it's always worth requesting the letter before your old policy lapses. We handle the paperwork with the insurer for you.
Seasonal and Occasional Riders
If your bike sits in the garage from November to March, ask about restricted-mileage or laid-up cover. Some Spanish insurers allow you to suspend road-risk cover while keeping fire and theft, which cuts the annual premium substantially. Note that a registered bike must remain insured for at least fire and theft or be formally deregistered (baja temporal) at the DGT.
