Thousands of British expats move to Spain each year bringing their UK-registered vehicle with them. It seems simple — you already own the car, you already have insurance. But the reality is more complicated, and getting it wrong can leave you uninsured, facing significant fines, or unable to legally drive your car on Spanish roads.
At Insurance Spain, we specialise in exactly this situation. We understand the rules, the timelines, and the insurers willing to cover UK-plated vehicles in Spain — and we handle everything in English.
Under Spanish law (Real Decreto 339/1990 and subsequent legislation), residents of Spain are required to re-register their foreign-plated vehicle on Spanish number plates within 30 days of establishing residency — or within 6 months of the vehicle entering Spain for those still in the process of becoming resident.
In practice, the re-registration process (matriculación) typically takes several months due to the bureaucracy involved. The key steps are:
The entire process can take 3–6 months even when handled efficiently. During this period, you are driving a UK-plated vehicle in Spain as a Spanish resident — and this is where the insurance problem arises.
The majority of mainstream Spanish insurance companies (Mapfre, Allianz, Axa, Generali) will not issue a Spanish policy on a UK-registered vehicle. Their systems are built around Spanish number plates — without one, the vehicle simply cannot be processed. Some will quote but exclude third-party liability for driving in Spain, which renders the policy effectively useless.
At the same time, your original UK insurance policy may not provide full cover in Spain for an extended period. Most UK policies provide only the minimum legally required third-party cover when driving abroad — fine for a holiday, but inadequate for someone living and driving in Spain full-time. Many UK insurers will also cancel a policy if they discover the policyholder has relocated abroad.
This creates a coverage gap at precisely the time when you most need insurance — during the re-registration process.
We work with specialist insurers who understand this transitional situation and will issue policies on UK-registered vehicles driven by Spanish residents. Cover options include:
Short to medium-term policies covering your UK-plated vehicle while you complete the re-registration process. Available as third-party only or fully comprehensive. Designed to bridge the gap between your UK policy ending and obtaining Spanish plates.
For vehicles that cannot be easily re-registered (classic cars, vehicles with outstanding UK finance, etc.), we arrange longer-term policies on UK-plated vehicles for Spanish residents. These are specialist products — not widely available — but we know where to find them.
Once your vehicle has Spanish plates, we arrange a standard Spanish car insurance policy in English, with access to all major Spanish insurers including Mapfre, Allianz, AXA, Caser, and Mutua Madrileña. We can also transfer your no-claims bonus from your UK policy in most cases.
One of the most common concerns for British expats is whether years of UK no-claims bonus (NCB) can be transferred to a Spanish policy. The good news is that most Spanish insurers will recognise UK NCB, subject to providing a letter from your UK insurer confirming your claims-free years. We advise requesting this letter before leaving the UK. Maximum recognised NCB is typically 5 years.
