Vans (furgonetas) are the workhorse of expat life in Spain — whether you run a building, pool-maintenance or removals business, or simply use one to move between your Spanish and UK homes. Spanish insurers treat vans differently from cars, and the single biggest cause of refused claims is a van insured for the wrong use. This page explains the options.

Private Use vs Commercial Use

The first question any Spanish insurer asks is what the van is for. The DGT registers most vans as N1 commercial vehicles, and the policy must match how you actually use it:

  • Private use (uso particular) — a camper conversion, a surf van, or a van used only for personal transport. Cheapest to insure.
  • Own-goods business use (uso propio profesional) — a tradesperson carrying their own tools and materials to jobs. The most common category for expats.
  • Hire and reward (transporte de mercancías por cuenta ajena) — couriers, removals and delivery drivers carrying other people's goods. Requires a transport authorisation for vans over 2,000 kg MAM and a specific policy.

Declaring private use on a van you use for work is not a money-saving trick; it is grounds for the insurer to void the policy after an accident.

Levels of Cover

The same three levels as a car: third party (terceros), third party fire and theft (terceros ampliado) and fully comprehensive (todo riesgo) with or without an excess. Theft cover is strongly recommended for any van carrying tools: van break-ins are common in coastal urbanisations and industrial estates.

Add-Ons That Matter for Working Vans

  • Tools and equipment in the van — standard policies exclude contents. Add-on cover of €1,500–€6,000 is available and is usually the most valuable extra a tradesperson can buy.
  • Goods in transit (mercancías transportadas) — for goods you are paid to carry, or high-value materials.
  • Sign-written vehicles — livery is covered under comprehensive policies if declared.
  • Any-driver cover — lets employees drive; the default Spanish policy restricts driving to named drivers.
  • Replacement van — keeps a business running while the van is repaired.
  • European cover — automatic for third-party liability across the EU and UK under the green card system, but check breakdown and comprehensive sections extend abroad if you drive back to the UK.

How Much Is Van Insurance in Spain?

  • Small van (Caddy, Berlingo, Kangoo) private use, third party: €280–€450/year
  • Medium van (Transit Custom, Vito, Trafic) own-goods trade use, comprehensive with excess: €600–€1,100/year
  • Large van (Sprinter, Ducato) hire and reward: €900–€1,800/year

A clean driving record and a transferable no-claims history reduce these significantly. Vans over 3,500 kg are treated as trucks and priced separately.

UK-Registered Vans in Spain

A van kept permanently in Spain by a resident must be re-registered on Spanish plates — UK insurers will usually not cover a vehicle based abroad beyond 30–90 days, and a UK-plated van used for work in Spain is a red flag for the Guardia Civil. We arrange cover for UK-plated vans during the matriculation process and a Spanish policy once it is on Spanish plates. See our British-registered vehicle page for the process.

Fleet Cover

Three or more vans can be placed on a single fleet policy with one renewal date, any-driver cover and a fleet discount. We arrange fleets for expat-run building, cleaning, gardening and property-management companies.

Why Use Us

We compare van quotes from 11+ Spanish insurers, make sure the use class matches your business, and explain the policy in English. If you have a claim, we deal with the insurer's Spanish-speaking claims department on your behalf.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers on van insurance spain

No. If the van is used for any business purpose, even occasionally, it must be insured for professional use. Declaring private use is the most common reason van claims are refused in Spain.
Not under a standard policy — vehicle contents are excluded. We can add tools-in-transit cover, typically €1,500–€6,000, and it is the most valuable extra for a tradesperson.
Carrying your own tools and materials does not need a transport authorisation. Carrying goods for payment (hire and reward) in a van over 2,000 kg requires a tarjeta de transporte from the regional transport authority, and the insurance must reflect it.
Only if the policy allows it. Spanish policies default to named drivers; we can add an any-driver or named-employees extension, which is essential for businesses with staff.
Temporarily, yes, while you re-register it. A van kept permanently in Spain by a resident must go onto Spanish plates within six months, and we can arrange cover through the whole process.
Third-party liability is automatically valid across the EU and the UK. Comprehensive and breakdown cover abroad varies by insurer — tell us if you make the trip and we will quote policies that extend fully.
