Spain is an incredibly dog-friendly country — dogs are welcome in most outdoor restaurants, on many beaches (outside peak summer), and in parks. But owning a dog comes with legal responsibilities, and some breeds require mandatory insurance.
Spain classifies certain breeds as perros potencialmente peligrosos (PPP — potentially dangerous dogs). If you own a PPP breed, you MUST have:
PPP breeds in Spain: Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, Akita Inu. Some autonomous communities add more breeds — for example, Andalucía includes Dobermann and Presa Canario.
Walking a PPP breed without a muzzle and short lead in public, or without valid insurance, can result in fines of €2,400 or more.
For non-PPP breeds, insurance is not legally mandatory but is strongly recommended. Any dog can cause an injury — a bite, tripping someone, running into a cyclist — and you are personally liable. A serious bite injury can result in compensation claims of €10,000–€50,000+.
Many home insurance policies include basic pet civil liability. Check yours — if the amount is less than €120,000, consider upgrading or getting a standalone pet policy.
Spanish vet fees are unregulated and vary by clinic. Typical costs:
Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease transmitted by sandfly bites. It is endemic throughout most of Spain, particularly in southern and central regions. Without treatment, it is fatal. With treatment, dogs can live a normal lifespan but require ongoing medication (typically €50–€100/month).
Prevention: use Scalibor collars or Seresto collars year-round, plus a Leishguard vaccine. Treatment costs are covered by most pet insurance policies, though some have a waiting period for leishmaniasis claims.
