Spain's combination of dry storage conditions, excellent roads, and a passionate classic car community makes it a natural home for historic vehicles. British expats in particular have brought their classic MGs, Land Rovers, Jaguars and Triumphs to the Costa del Sol and beyond. But insuring a classic car in Spain requires a completely different approach to standard motor insurance.
Standard Spanish car insurance is built around depreciating modern vehicles driven tens of thousands of kilometres a year. It fails classic car owners in two critical ways:
Underinsurance: Standard policies settle total losses at market value — typically based on depreciation tables or used car listings. A 1972 Jaguar E-Type or a restored 1969 Porsche 911 will never appear in a standard valuation guide at anything close to its true collector value. You could be insured for a fraction of what your car is actually worth.
Overcharging for usage: Standard policies assume regular, year-round use. A classic driven only at weekends and to shows, covering perhaps 3,000 km per year, shouldn't cost what a daily driver costs to insure. Specialist policies offer limited-mileage options that correctly reflect your actual risk exposure.
Vehicles over 25 years old in Spain can apply for official vehículo histórico (historic vehicle) classification under Royal Decree 1247/1995. This unlocks several benefits:

The most important feature of any specialist classic car policy. Before cover starts, you and the insurer agree the value of the vehicle — supported by a professional valuation, restoration receipts or auction comparables. In the event of a total loss, the agreed sum is paid in full, with no depreciation argument. This is non-negotiable for any vehicle with a collector value.
When repairs are needed, a specialist classic policy commits to period-correct restoration — sourcing original or correct-specification parts and using experienced restorer labour rates, not a standard bodyshop. This matters enormously for vehicles where incorrect repairs would compromise value.
Declare your honest annual mileage. Policies for vehicles driven under 5,000 km per year can cost 40–60% less than open-mileage policies. Common annual mileage options: 2,500 km, 5,000 km, 7,500 km.
Many British expats have classic cars still on UK plates. If you are resident in Spain, the law requires re-registration within 30 days of establishing residency — this applies to classic vehicles as much as modern ones. Some owners assume historic vehicles are exempt; they are not. Driving an unregistered foreign-plated vehicle as a Spanish resident is illegal and will invalidate your insurance.
Re-registration of classic vehicles is more complex than modern cars, requiring ITV inspection (often with historic vehicle provisions) and Hacienda valuation. A specialist broker can guide you through the process and ensure you have valid cover throughout the transition period.
A classic car driven under 5,000 km/year with an agreed value of €20,000 can be comprehensively insured from around €250–€450/year.
