Boat Insurance in Spain: What You Need Before Summer

With summer approaching, now is the perfect time to review your boat insurance. Whether you are recommissioning after winter storage or buying a new vessel, getting the right cover before the season starts means you can enjoy the water without worrying.

Is Boat Insurance Mandatory in Spain?

Yes — third-party liability insurance is mandatory for all motorised vessels in Spain. The minimum cover required depends on your boat's length:

  • Under 6 metres: €150,000 liability
  • 6–12 metres: €300,000 liability
  • Over 12 metres: €600,000 liability

Non-motorised sailing boats are not legally required to have insurance, but we recommend it — a collision with another vessel could leave you personally liable for tens of thousands in damages.

Pre-Season Insurance Checklist

1. Review your navigation zone

Check that your policy covers where you actually plan to sail this summer. If you are planning a trip to the Balearics, Gibraltar, or the Canary Islands, ensure your navigation zone includes these waters. Sailing outside your insured zone means no cover.

2. Update your vessel's declared value

If your boat has appreciated (some classic boats and well-maintained yachts do) or you have added equipment (new electronics, upgraded engine, new sails), update the insured value. Underinsurance means reduced payouts.

3. Check your tender/dinghy cover

Inflatable tenders and outboard dinghies are frequently stolen from boats at anchor. Ensure they are specifically covered under your policy, not just the main vessel.

4. Marina liability

Most marinas in Spain require proof of insurance before allocating a berth. Your policy should cover damage to marina infrastructure and neighbouring boats during manoeuvring.

Summer-Specific Risks

  • Anchor damage — in crowded anchorages, boats drag onto each other. RC cover is essential.
  • Theft at anchor — dinghies, outboards, and electronics are targets when boats are left at anchor overnight. Ensure your policy covers theft from unattended vessels.
  • Guest liability — if you have friends on board and someone is injured, you could be liable. Check your passenger liability limits.
  • Fuel spill — environmental cleanup for a diesel spill can cost tens of thousands. Most comprehensive policies include pollution liability.

Costs for the 2026 Season

  • Small motorboat (5–7m) — €300 to €600/year fully comprehensive
  • Mid-range sailboat (9–12m) — €600 to €1,200/year
  • Motor yacht (12–18m) — €1,500 to €4,000/year
