Best Areas in Spain for British Expats: An Insurance Perspective

Spain has one of the largest British expat communities in the world, with an estimated 300,000+ UK nationals living here permanently. But where you settle can significantly affect your insurance costs and needs. Here is a region-by-region guide from an insurance perspective.

Costa del Sol (Malaga Province)

The most established British expat hub. Towns like Marbella, Fuengirola, Benalmadena, and Torremolinos have large English-speaking communities, English-speaking doctors, and a well-developed infrastructure for foreigners.

Insurance notes: Good availability of English-speaking claims support. Car insurance premiums are moderate. Home insurance costs are average — main risks are water damage in apartment buildings and theft in villas. Health insurance networks are excellent with many private clinics catering to expats.

Costa Blanca (Alicante Province)

The second most popular British expat destination. Torrevieja, La Zenia, and Alicante city all have significant British communities. More affordable property than the Costa del Sol.

Insurance notes: Home insurance premiums can be slightly higher in low-lying areas due to DANA storm flooding risk (the September 2024 floods hit parts of the southern Costa Blanca). Ensure your policy has adequate flood cover through the Consorcio. Car insurance is generally cheaper than the Costa del Sol. Health insurance: good private options in Alicante city, fewer English-speaking doctors in smaller inland towns.

Valencia

Valencia is increasingly popular with younger expats, digital nomads, and families attracted by the city lifestyle, beach access, and lower cost of living than Barcelona or Madrid.

Insurance notes: Urban car insurance premiums are higher than coastal towns. Health insurance networks are excellent — Valencia has some of Spain's best private hospitals. Home insurance is straightforward. Bicycle insurance is worth considering as Valencia has an extensive bike lane network.

Barcelona & Catalonia

Barcelona attracts a younger, more international expat crowd. It is the most expensive area in Spain for property and, consequently, for home insurance.

Insurance notes: Highest car insurance premiums in Spain due to urban theft and accident rates. Scooter and motorcycle theft is very common — always get theft cover. Home insurance: apartment living dominates, so civil liability for water damage is critical. Health insurance: the best private hospital network in Spain.

Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca)

Ibiza and Mallorca have established expat communities. Property prices are high, particularly in Ibiza.

Insurance notes: Home insurance premiums are slightly higher due to island logistics (repair costs are higher when materials and labour have to be shipped). Car insurance is moderate. Boat insurance is a common need — many expats here own watercraft. Health insurance: Palma de Mallorca has excellent private clinics; smaller islands are more limited.

Canary Islands

Tenerife and Gran Canaria are growing rapidly as expat destinations, particularly for digital nomads and retirees seeking year-round warmth. See our dedicated pages for Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura.

Insurance notes: Car insurance is generally cheaper than mainland Spain. Home insurance should account for volcanic risk (covered by the Consorcio). Health insurance networks are good in Las Palmas and Santa Cruz but limited in smaller towns — private cover with evacuation to the mainland is worth considering for serious conditions.

Murcia

Murcia offers some of the lowest property prices on the Mediterranean coast, attracting budget-conscious retirees.

Insurance notes: Very affordable insurance across the board. Main consideration is flood risk in low-lying areas near the Mar Menor. Health insurance: fewer English-speaking options than the costas, making private cover with a good hospital network more important.
